The Art World Came to Aldeburgh for

10 Days Devoted to Every Aspect of Visual Art

The first year of Aldeburgh ART was hugely successful and thank you so much to everyone who was involved.  Next year we will make a few changes to ensure that it is even better.  Watch this space!!

Art from the international avant-garde, from Britain and from Suffolk came to Aldeburgh during the summer, starting with Aldeburgh ART week at the end of May (21st-30th May) 2011.

Royal Academicians Peter Blake, Eileen Cooper, Stephen Farthing, Anthony Green and John Hoyland made work especially for this new visual art festival. The international avant-garde artists Joseph Beuys and Marina Abramovic inspired performance art on the beach, guest curated by the legendary Richard Demarco.  Ryan Gander flew his flag on the top of the Lookout.

Eminent British sculptors, including Nigel Hall, Elisabeth Frink and Laurence Edwards show at a new sculpture park at Glemham Hall and Suffolk artists exhibited along the Aldeburgh promenade. We also held exhibitions, plays, poetry, discussions, films and music plus visits to art galleries, studios, private collections, lunches and dinners, all relating in some way to visual art.

Building on the strong cultural heritage of Suffolk, Aldeburgh ART’s aim is to match and complement the profile of the Aldeburgh Festival, known internationally for its innovative and classical music.

Aldeburgh ART (21st-30th May 2011) was a new initiative by Caroline Wiseman, a modern and contemporary art dealer based in London and Suffolk. She has recently taken the South Lookout on Aldeburgh Beach as a catalyst for inspiration for artists, and is curating an exciting visual art program in this well-loved historic tower.

Caroline Wiseman says, “We plan to make this special seaside town a centre of the British art world during Aldeburgh ART week and throughout the year with innovative art which will excite visitors and involve and interest the whole community. We are responding to the phenomenon that many of Britain’s major artists have come to live in Suffolk, drawn by Aldeburgh’s sense of cultural innovation. ”

Autumn 2010 saw the start of The Aldeburgh Beach South Lookout Project that invites artists of national and international stature, as well as local Suffolk artists, to be inspired and to stretch their creative boundaries.
