Artists from Aldeburgh ART 2011

Richard Demarco:

“Richard Demarco is without doubt a remarkable man, an Italian Scot, a founder of the Traverse Theatre, a man who is an artist, a writer, a philosopher. He is a man who has brought contemporary visual arts to the Edinburgh Festival. He has been involved in more than 50 Edinburgh Festivals, and has brought great artists like Joseph Beuys and Kantor to thousands of people. He has also brought the visual arts from other parts of the world, from Eastern Europe, long before other people were interested. And he has inspired us all…” Sir Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate Gallery.

Richard Demarco is an internationally renowned arts impresario and as one of the founders of the Edinburgh Festival introduced both Joseph Beuys and Marina Abramovic to the UK. To celebrate his 80th birthday, the Scottish Royal Academy held a retrospective in his honour.  He has a personal link to Aldeburgh as he stopped here on his famous arts voyage to Europe and immediately sees the enormous potential of the visual arts in Suffolk and was pleased to guest curate.

Joseph Beuys:

Joseph Beuys, who died in 1986, is widely understood to be the most important German artist of the post–World War II period with an international reputation.
During the 1960s and 1970s Beuys was a major pioneer of sound and objects as sculptural materials. He believed that ‘everyone is an artist.’
Beuys conceived of society as a whole as one big work of art to which each person could contribute creatively. Based on his vision of ‘social sculpture’, the performance art on Aldeburgh beach involved all members of the community participating in a photography performance sculpture.

Marina Abramovic:

Marina Abramovic is probably the world’s most influential performance artist. Abramović's work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body, and the possibilities of the mind.  She endeavours to transmit the presence of the artist and make her historical performances accessible to a larger audience.
On Aldeburgh Beach we recreated ‘Blanket’. This is a community based performance piece she created for her recent critically acclaimed exhibition at MoMA, in New York.

Peter Blake RA:

Peter Blake is a painter of urban realist subjects and a pioneer of 'Pop Art'. He is often referred to as the Godfather of British Pop Art, and is best known for his brightprints and the design of the sleeve for The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. He has been inspired by Aldeburgh in his youth, and continues to feel strongly for the area. To see his works please click here.

Nigel Hall RA:

“My work has always been about place. I am fascinated by the way geometry can be discerned in landscape.”

Nigel Hall is a draughtsman and a sculptor. His work demonstrates a preoccupation with implied space and volume, suggested through form, line and edge. One of Britain’s major sculptors who exhibits internationally, his favourite composer is Benjamin Britten. To see his works please click here.

Eileen Cooper RA:

Eileen Cooper is a painter and printmaker. She is head of the Printmaking Department at the Royal Academy Schools and is one of the major British figurative artists who emerged in the mid 1980's. She made a series of work inspired by the people on the beach of Aldeburgh. To see her works please click here.

Stephen Farthing RA:

Stephen Farthing is the Professor of Drawing at the University of the Arts, London, and as a long-standing teacher and editor of several books, including, ‘Art: The Whole Story’ published in 2010, he has huge knowledge and enthusiasm to bring to Aldeburgh Art week.  He has been greatly inspired by the sea, as can be seen in his 2010 show in the Royal Academy

Mat Collishaw:

Mat Collishaw is part of the YBA’s (Young British Artists) along with Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas.
He has a very contemporary response to historic locations, as witnessed in his show at the Freud museum, and currently in the V&A.

Ryan Gander:

Ryan Gander, a conceptual artist who lives in Saxmundham, is already receiving international recognition. His work is multi-faceted, ranging through installation, sculpture, intervention, writing and lecturing.

Anthony Green RA:

Anthony Green is one of the UK's most eminent and best loved narrative and figurative painters. His career as an artist has now spanned fifty years and his irregularly shaped paintings and sculptures, often autobiographical subject matter, wonderful colour and skilful execution have been enjoyed and admired by thousands all over the world. To see his works please click here.

John Hoyland RA: (1934 - 2011)

John Hoyland was one of the country's leading abstract painters. Hoyland painted powerful, richly coloured canvases, with the artist's trademark layers of thick paint, rivers of colour running down the canvas, and his nerve-cell-like central focus. Inspired by nature, he allowed the paint to behave in its natural way. To see his works please click here.
